How a Credit Score is Calculated

It is often a mystery how the credit score is calculated and the exact ratio of each of the factors involved in the calculation. The exact equation is kept secret by Fair Isaac, but the estimated percentages of each of the factors are known.

A person's payment history makes up about 35% of the total score. The level of debt is 30% and length of credit history is 15%. Credit inquiries and types of credit in use each account for 10% of the total credit score.

Businesses may use their own calculations depending on which areas are important to them. Some areas they will place a higher priority on and others they may completely ignore.
